UPVC Door Won't Lock Properly?

A UPVC door lock is more complicated than it looks.

What most people call “the lock” may actually involve several separate parts: the euro cylinder where the key goes, the handles, a central gearbox, a long multipoint locking mechanism, and the keeps that the hooks or bolts engage with in the frame.

That matters because a problem with one part doesn't necessarily mean the whole locking system needs replacing. Sometimes the cylinder has failed. Sometimes the gearbox is damaged. Sometimes the mechanism is worn. And sometimes there is nothing seriously wrong with the lock at all — the door has simply moved out of alignment.

At DIALOCK, the first job is to identify what is actually causing the problem before deciding what needs to be repaired or replaced. For timber doors, mortice locks and night latches, see Lock Repair Dublin.

Start with the symptom

What Is Your UPVC Door Doing?

  • 01

The key is difficult to turn

If the key has gradually become stiff, the problem could be the cylinder, the mechanism behind it, or excessive pressure caused by poor door alignment. If it turns easily open but not closed, alignment may be contributing. Avoid forcing it: a broken key can add to the original fault.

  • 02

The handle is difficult to lift

Possible causes include door alignment, hooks or rollers meeting resistance at the keeps, wear inside the multipoint mechanism, or a failing gearbox. A stiff handle does not automatically mean the complete multipoint lock has failed.

  • 03

The handle spins or feels unusually loose

The fault may be in the handle assembly, spindle or gearbox rather than the entire multipoint strip.

  • 04

The door only locks if you push, pull or lift it

This often suggests an alignment issue. Replacing a serviceable mechanism without correcting alignment would not solve the underlying problem.

  • 05

The key turns but the door still doesn't lock

The fault may be further inside the gearbox or multipoint mechanism.

  • 06

    Grinding, clicking or unusual noises

New resistance or unusual noises can be early signs of developing problems and are worth checking before complete failure.

A simple guide to the parts

UPVC Door Lock Anatomy: What Are We Actually Talking About?

The cylinder, handles, gearbox, locking strip and keeps each have a separate job. Knowing which part is causing the issue helps avoid unnecessary replacement.

Diagnosis before replacement

Does the Whole Multipoint Lock Need Replacing?

Not necessarily.

A cylinder problem may only require cylinder replacement. A gearbox failure may sometimes be resolved by replacing the gearbox. An alignment problem may require adjustment rather than replacement of the locking mechanism.

Damaged handles may be repairable or replaceable independently. A failed or badly worn multipoint mechanism may justify replacement of the complete mechanism.

A proper diagnosis can make a substantial difference to the work required.

Security is a complete system

A Strong Multipoint Lock Can Still Be Let Down by the Wrong Cylinder

A UPVC door can have substantial hooks or bolts securing it at several points into the frame, while still using a relatively basic euro cylinder to control the locking system.

More locking points do not automatically compensate for a poor cylinder. The cylinder is physically small, but it is a critical part of the security of the complete system.

Explained simply

What Is an Anti-Snap Euro Cylinder?

“Anti-snap” relates to resistance against physical attack on the euro cylinder. Rather than relying only on marketing wording, recognised independent security ratings are more meaningful.

TS007 3-star Sold Secure Diamond
High-security option

What to Look for in a Higher-Security Cylinder

Look for recognised independent ratings such as BSI 3 Star Kitemark and Sold Secure Diamond, with protection against snapping, drilling, plug extraction, picking and bumping. One high-security option we fit is the APECS AP. See Security Upgrades Dublin.

You do not always need an upgrade. If a cylinder is already being replaced, it can be a sensible time to discuss whether to replace like-for-like or improve the security level.

Correct Cylinder Size Matters Too

A high-security cylinder still needs to be correctly sized for the door and surrounding hardware. Avoid unnecessary cylinder projection: the quality of the cylinder, its security rating and the way it fits the door all matter.

Targeted repairs

Common UPVC Door Lock Repairs

Cylinder Replacement

For faulty, damaged or worn cylinders, or for security upgrades.

Gearbox Repair or Replacement

Where the central gearbox has failed but the rest of the mechanism remains serviceable.

Multipoint Mechanism Replacement

Where the mechanism is badly worn, damaged or no longer economically repairable.

Door Alignment & Adjustment

Where locking points meet excessive resistance because the door and frame are no longer correctly aligned.

Handle & Hardware Problems

Where handles or associated hardware are causing the issue without replacing the entire locking system.

Early signs are worth checking

Don't Wait Until the Door Stops Locking Completely

  • handle becoming progressively harder to lift
  • mechanism becoming rough
  • key occasionally sticking
  • door locks easily open but struggles closed
  • door needing more pushing or pulling
  • locking points behaving differently

A stiff UPVC door is often cheaper to investigate before it becomes a door that won't lock at all.

The right fix, not just the biggest fix

Repair or Replace?

Repair may make sense when
  • only one serviceable component has failed
  • the gearbox can be replaced independently
  • the cylinder is the issue
  • adjustment solves the problem
  • compatible parts remain available
  • the rest of the mechanism is in good condition
Replacement may make more sense when
  • the mechanism has extensive wear or damage
  • several components are failing
  • the mechanism is obsolete
  • appropriate parts are unavailable
  • repeated repairs are no longer economical
  • existing security is no longer appropriate

Sometimes the best answer is: Repair the mechanism, upgrade the cylinder.

UPVC & composite doors

UPVC and Composite Door Locks

Many composite doors also use euro cylinders and multipoint locking systems. The same diagnostic principle applies: identify the faulty component before deciding how much of the system needs replacing.

DIALOCK repairs both UPVC and composite door locking systems throughout Dublin. Window and patio mechanisms are covered on Window & Patio Door Lock Repair Dublin.

Practical advice

A Few Things Not to Do With a Failing UPVC Lock

  • Don't keep forcing a stiff handle.
  • Don't repeatedly force a stiff key.
  • Don't spray random products into the lock.
  • Don't assume the complete lock needs replacing.

04

What will the repair cost before work starts?

The proposed work and price should be clear before the repair begins.

Answers, clearly explained

Frequently Asked Questions About UPVC Door Locks

  • Why won't my UPVC door lock?

The cause may be door alignment, the cylinder, handles, gearbox or the multipoint mechanism. We test the door to identify the likely fault.

  • Why does my UPVC door only lock when I lift or pull it?

This often points to alignment, with the locking points meeting resistance at the keeps in the frame.

  • Why is my UPVC door handle getting stiff?

It can be caused by alignment, a failing gearbox, worn mechanism or hardware. It is worth checking before it becomes a complete failure.

  • Can a UPVC multipoint lock be repaired?

Often, yes. If one serviceable component has failed, repair or a partial replacement may be the sensible option.

  • Can you replace only the gearbox?

Where compatible parts are available and the rest of the mechanism is serviceable, a gearbox can sometimes be replaced independently.

  • Can you replace just the euro cylinder?

Yes. A cylinder is often replaceable independently of the multipoint mechanism.

  • Is an anti-snap cylinder worth fitting?

If a cylinder is already being replaced, it can be a sensible time to discuss like-for-like replacement or a recognised high-security upgrade. Security Upgrades Dublin.

  • Does having a multipoint lock mean my UPVC door is already high security?

Not necessarily. Strong hooks or bolts can still be controlled by a relatively basic euro cylinder.

  • What is the difference between the cylinder and the multipoint lock?

The cylinder is where the key is inserted; the multipoint mechanism is the long system that operates hooks, rollers or bolts around the door edge.

  • Should my euro cylinder stick out from the handle?

Correct sizing matters. Avoid unnecessary cylinder projection and ensure it fits the door and surrounding hardware correctly.

  • Can you repair composite door locks too?

Yes. Many composite doors use euro cylinders and multipoint systems, so the same diagnostic principle applies.

  • Should I replace the lock if I've just moved home?

Changing access can be sensible after moving. We can explain whether a cylinder replacement or wider security upgrade is appropriate. Lock Replacement Dublin.
