If you have just discovered that your home or business has been broken into, your first priority is safety — not the lock.
If you think an intruder may still be inside or nearby, do not enter the property. Call 999 or 112.
Otherwise, report the burglary to An Garda Síochána as soon as possible. Before repairing damaged doors, windows or locks, avoid unnecessarily disturbing the area until Gardaí have finished with the scene.
Once it is safe and the relevant entry point can be worked on, the practical question becomes:
“Can the property be securely locked again?”
The first objective is to make the affected door or window capable of being properly closed and locked again.

Sometimes it is. Sometimes another component also needs attention. And sometimes damage to the door, frame or glazing goes beyond locksmith work and requires another specialist.

Forced entry does not always damage only “the lock”. A door is a system made up of several components, and different types of forced entry can affect different parts of that system.
On doors using a euro-profile cylinder, the cylinder itself may be damaged while much of the remaining mechanism survives. In that situation, replacing the entire locking system may not be necessary. But the rest of the mechanism should still be checked before assuming that only the cylinder was affected.
A lock body or gearbox can suffer internal damage even when there is relatively little visible damage from outside. If the key, handle, latch, bolt or locking points no longer operate correctly, the internal mechanism may need repair or replacement.
Handles, escutcheons and surrounding hardware can become bent, loose or damaged during attempted entry. These parts may also affect the operation or protection of the locking components behind them.
A lock is only useful if its bolt, hook or latch engages securely with the frame. If the keep, strike area or surrounding frame has been damaged, fitting a new lock alone may not restore proper security.
We inspect the whole affected locking point, not just the most visibly damaged part.
UPVC and many composite doors use an integrated multipoint locking system. That may include a euro cylinder, central gearbox, multipoint strip, hooks, bolts or rollers, handles and keeps in the frame.
After forced entry, one component may fail while others remain serviceable. A damaged cylinder does not automatically mean the whole multipoint mechanism needs replacing. Equally, an intact-looking cylinder does not prove that the gearbox or locking points are undamaged.

Timber doors can fail differently. A mortice lock or night latch may still operate while the timber around the lock or keep has been damaged. Or the lock itself may have suffered internal damage while the surrounding door remains largely sound.
Where significant carpentry or structural door-frame repair is required, that should be dealt with separately from the lock itself.
A break-in or attempted break-in can also affect window handles, espagnolette mechanisms, patio multipoint locks, cylinders, hooks, keeps, locking hardware and alignment.

The purpose of the inspection is to distinguish between those situations.
A burglary does not have to physically damage a lock for that lock to become a security concern. If keys have been stolen — or you cannot account for all copies — the lock may still work perfectly while key security has been compromised.

After a burglary it is understandable to want to replace everything immediately. But that is not always the best approach.
A security upgrade can make sense after a break-in. But it should be based on what the incident has actually revealed — not simply on fitting the most expensive hardware available.
Sometimes a break-in exposes a weakness that was not obvious before.
Possible improvements may include a higher-security cylinder where appropriate, improved locking hardware, replacement of an obsolete mechanism, better engagement with keeps or replacing an inadequate existing lock.
An upgrade should solve an identifiable weakness — not simply add more hardware.
Where the affected door uses a euro-profile cylinder, replacing a damaged or low-security cylinder may also be an opportunity to choose a higher-security option.

Where stolen keys affect more than one access point, the issue may extend beyond the visibly damaged entrance.
